Why should I have a Wikipedia page?

You should have a Wikipedia page only if you or your company are already notable enough to be in an encyclopedia. It can be a valuable tool for helping people verify who you are, what you are known for, and why independent sources have covered you.

Your website tells people what you say about yourself. Wikipedia tells people what independent sources say about you.

How do I get a Wikipedia page?

The first step is figuring out if you qualify. Once you determine if you are notable, you can request a page be created, create one yourself, or hire someone to create a Wikipedia page for you. Once properly written, formatted, and cited, it is always recommended you submit through the Articles for Creation process as opposed to posting direct to the main space.

Evaluate notability first. If you are not notable, no amount of writing will allow you to have a viable Wikipedia page.

Can I create a Wikipedia page for myself?

Yes, but it is not recommended. Wikipedia considers self-written pages a conflict of interest. It is difficult to be neutral when writing about yourself or your company, which is why most self-written articles get rejected.

Creating your own page can backfire. If editors think the article is promotional, weakly sourced, or written by someone too close to the subject, it can be declined, tagged, or deleted.

Can my company have a Wikipedia page?

Yes, but only if the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines. A company does not qualify just because it is successful, profitable, funded, or well known in its industry. It must have reliable, independent sources that cover it in-depth. A large company with weak sources may not qualify. A smaller company with strong independent coverage might.

Wikipedia is not asking if your company is good. It is asking if independent sources have covered it enough to support an encyclopedia article.

What are the benefits of having a Wikipedia page?

The biggest benefit is third-party validation, providing immediate credibility and confirming that you have met strict notability standards. It is the difference between telling people you matter and having independent sources prove it.

A Wikipedia page verifies that you are credible.

Does a Wikipedia page help with SEO?

Yes, but not in the traditional sense. The SEO value comes from visibility, trust, and entity recognition, otherwise known as E.E.A.T. (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). Wikipedia is not a backlink strategy and should never be used for a direct SEO benefit.

Wikipedia is not about getting a backlink or direct SEO benefits. It is about helping search engines understand you are an authority that can be trusted based on your experience and expertise.

Is Wikipedia still important in the age of AI?

Yes. Wikipedia may be more important now because AI overviews often cite content from Wikipedia. This does not mean a Wikipedia page guarantees that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, or Google AI Overviews will mention you. But, it does mean that Wikipedia helps shape how your public profile is understood by large language models.

AI systems train on Wikipedia and cite it in real time. A Wikipedia page does not guarantee AI mentions you, but it shapes how AI understands you.

Does Wikipedia help with a Google Knowledge Panel?

Yes, Wikipedia and Wikidata are commonly used for the creation of Google Knowledge Panels. Wikipedia helps Google understand basic information about you, distinguishing you from other entities that may share the same or similar name.

Wikipedia can support a Knowledge Panel directly and through its sister project, Wikidata.

How does Wikipedia affect ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity?

Wikipedia can influence how AI tools describe you, your company, or your brand. It serves as both a training ground for LLMs and for real-time grounding when AI tools cite content via Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). AI systems use structured data from websites such as Wikipedia to source public information to help understand you. It also helps AI tools verify who you are and why you are notable.

A Wikipedia page does not let you control AI answers, but does give structured data for AI systems to better understand you.

Who edits Wikipedia pages?

Wikipedia pages are written and edited by volunteer editors all over the world. Anyone can edit Wikipedia, but edits must follow Wikipedia's rules. Any content addition must be neutral in tone and be properly sourced. Wikipedia also allows paid editors to contribute, but they must disclose their relationship to the subject and are required to follow Wikipedia guidelines on conflict of interest editing.

Wikipedia is edited by the public, but that does not mean anything can be added.

Do I own or control my Wikipedia page?

No. You do not own or control a Wikipedia page about you or your company. You also cannot use references such as your personal website to source your Wikipedia page. Once a page is live, other editors can change it. They can remove promotional language, challenge sources, add criticism, rewrite sections, or nominate the page for deletion.

Your website is owned media. Your Wikipedia page is not. Anyone can update it and the content is available to anyone under a Creative Commons license.

Should every business or public figure have a Wikipedia page?

No. In fact, most people should not have a Wikipedia page. Since Wikipedia is not a business directory, articles are reserved for people and companies that are truly notable. Also, once a Wikipedia article is created, you no longer have complete control of the narrative since anyone is allowed to edit and it is a summary of what reliable sources say about you.

If you do not qualify yet, build the source profile first. Wikipedia comes after notability, not before it.

Is having a Wikipedia page worth it?

Yes, if you qualify. Having a Wikipedia article provides major benefits which include brand credibility, SEO visibility, and being correctly identified by large language models such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. It is not worth it if you are trying to use Wikipedia as a shortcut to look important. Weak sourcing, promotional writing, or a lack of notability can cause the page to be rejected or deleted.

Do not ask, "Can I get a Wikipedia page?" Ask, "Do I qualify for a Wikipedia page that can stay live?"

What are the disadvantages of having a Wikipedia page?

The biggest disadvantage of having a Wikipedia page is loss of control. You do not own the page once it is live. Other editors can add, remove, or change information if their edits follow Wikipedia policy. Negative information can also be added if it is relevant, neutral, and supported by reliable sources. This is why I never recommend using Wikipedia as a reputation management tool.

If you have a complicated public history, do a risk review before creating a page. Sometimes the smart move is to not have a Wikipedia page at all.
